🧘♂️ How to Control the Mind? – Bhagavad Gita Wisdom
✨ Introduction
In today’s world, man has conquered the outer world but failed to win over his own mind. The mind is constantly running — worrying about the past, fearing the future, or chasing pleasures.
So the question arises:
“Can the mind be controlled?”
And if yes, then how?
Bhagavad Gita gives a very practical answer:
“First control the senses, and the mind will follow.”
(Gita – Chapter 3, Verse 7)
🌀 Why is the Mind So Restless?
The mind constantly seeks sensory pleasure — tasty food, beautiful sights, fame, emotional comfort.
👉 All this reaches the mind through the senses.
“The mind is restless; controlling it is as difficult as controlling the wind.”
(Gita 6.34)
🔗 Why Control the Senses First?
“Without controlling the senses, restraining the mind is impossible.”
The senses feed the mind with desires. Here’s how:
| Senses | Objects | Results |
|---|---|---|
| Eyes | Beautiful forms | Desire |
| Tongue | Taste | Craving |
| Ears | Sounds/Music | Attachment |
👉 As long as the senses keep running after objects, the mind remains disturbed.
🧠 Key Insight:
“The mind alone can’t do anything unless the senses obey.”
Example:
The mind says – “Eat two more sweets.” But unless your hands and tongue cooperate, it’s just a thought — not action.
👉 Senses give power to the mind. When senses are controlled, the mind calms down.
🍽️ Practical Example: Food Discipline
You love rice and dal. Eating a little extra occasionally is fine. But if you chase taste every day:
- Your digestion weakens
- Energy drops
- Problems like obesity, acidity, or sugar begin
👉 This is called indulgence – weakness of the mind caused by uncontrolled senses.
🪷 Gita’s 3-Step Solution
1. Control the Senses
“Thinking of objects → Attachment → Desire → Anger → Delusion → Downfall”
(Gita 2.62–63)
Tips:
- See less and pure
- Hear noble words
- Eat sattvic food
- Discipline the body and mind
➡️ Take only what you need — don’t get trapped in cravings.
2. Fix the Mind on God
“Fix your mind on Me alone.”
(Gita 12.8)
Practice:
- Daily 10–15 minutes name chanting
- Understand 1 Gita verse daily
- Live a sattvic lifestyle with satsang, bhajan, and seva
3. Work without Attachment
“Yoga is skill in action.”
(Gita 2.50)
Live like this:
- Eat – but with moderation
- Speak – but only when needed
- Earn – but without greed
- Act – but stay unattached
👉 Be in the world, but not of the world.
🧠 Scientific Perspective
Modern neuroscience agrees:
- Frontal cortex makes decisions
- Senses trigger dopamine release
- Excess dopamine causes cravings & distraction
“Sensory moderation rewires the brain for focus and peace.”
🧩 Why Sense Control = Mind Control?
Because the mind feeds on what senses supply.
If you listen to toxic songs, watch random reels, gossip all day – the mind becomes impure.
👉 “Cut the supply, and craving will fade.”
